Austria is well covered in the cities, along the motorway network and through the main Alpine valleys. Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck and Graz are all dense. As in Switzerland, what you lose is altitude away from infrastructure: the higher slopes, the hiking paths above the tree line and the quieter side valleys often have no signal. A Halo eSIM installs before you fly and starts counting on its first connection after you arrive. Rail coverage is good along the main lines between Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck, with drops in the longer tunnels through the Alps. Ski areas generally have coverage around the lift stations and the villages and less on the far side of a mountain. A regional Europe plan usually covers Austria alongside Germany and Italy for less than separate plans.
Three to five GB for a week. Austrian cities are compact and well served by public transport, and Wi-Fi is reliable. Add a little for a driving trip through the Alps or for hiking, where you will download route data before setting out.
Our Austria plans run on networks carrying 5G, available across Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck and Graz.

Around the villages, lift stations and main pistes, generally yes. On the back side of a mountain, in the deeper valleys and on ski touring routes away from the lifts, often not. Download piste maps offline rather than relying on loading them at the top of a lift.
Along the main lines, yes, with predictable drops in the longer tunnels. The routes between Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck hold a signal for most of their length. The scenic regional lines through the higher valleys are less consistent.
Halo eSIMs are exclusively data-only eSIMs. While you can engage in voice calls and messaging through WhatsApp, Facetime, and other widely used VOIP apps, traditional phone calls and SMS are not supported.
Most phones from 2018 onwards support eSIM, including iPhone XR and XS and newer, Pixel 3 and newer, Galaxy S20 and newer. If it's a reasonably recent phone, you're probably fine. Check our device compatibility page if you want to be sure.
Before you leave, while you're still on Wi-Fi. Your plan only starts counting when you first connect to a network at your destination, so there's no cost to installing early. Austria plans run from 1 to 45 days from that first connection. One less thing to sort at the airport.
Each plan lists its own networks and speed policy under Plan details on this page. Which networks a plan uses is set by our network partners and can change without notice, so we show them per plan rather than for the destination as a whole. Your device finds and connects to a supported network on its own when you arrive.
Yes, on the fixed-data plans. Running low? Purchase another plan for the same destination from your order page. The new data gets added to your existing eSIM. No reinstall needed. Top-ups are not available on the Unlimited (daily) plans. To keep using data after an Unlimited plan ends, buy a new plan.
Hotspot availability depends on the plan. Halo adds no separate hotspot cap and does not meter hotspot data differently, so on plans that support it you can share your connection with a laptop, tablet or travel companion where the local network allows. Hotspot is provided by the network operator in Austria rather than by Halo, so it is not something we can guarantee on every plan.
