When should I buy and install my eSIM?

You can buy your Halo eSIM at any time before your trip. There is no rush to leave it until the last minute, and installing early gives you one less thing to think about on travel day.

When to buy

Buy your eSIM whenever it suits you. Your data plan does not start counting when you purchase it. The validity period begins only when your eSIM first connects to a mobile network at your destination.

Buying a few days before departure gives you time to install and check that everything is working without any pressure.

When to install

Install your eSIM the day before you travel. Installation requires an internet connection to download the eSIM profile, so do it while you are still on your home Wi-Fi or mobile data.

Installing the day before means:

  • You are not relying on airport Wi-Fi, which can be slow or require sign-up.
  • You have time to troubleshoot if anything goes wrong.
  • Your eSIM is ready to connect the moment you land.

For step-by-step installation instructions, see the guide for your device:

How activation works

After installation, your eSIM sits idle until you arrive at your destination. When your phone detects a supported network, the eSIM activates and your data plan begins.

You do not need to do anything manually. The connection usually happens within a few minutes of landing and turning off airplane mode.

Before you board

A quick checklist before you head to the airport:

  1. Confirm the eSIM profile appears in your phone’s mobile data or cellular settings.
  2. Make sure Data Roaming is enabled for the Halo eSIM line.
  3. Set the Halo eSIM as your mobile data line (keep your primary SIM for calls and texts).
  4. Turn off Allow Mobile Data Switching (iPhone) to prevent your phone from using your home SIM for data.

What if I forget to install before travelling?

You can still install at your destination as long as you have an internet connection. Use hotel Wi-Fi, airport Wi-Fi, or ask someone to share their hotspot. The eSIM will activate as soon as the profile is downloaded and your phone connects to the local network.
