When to installNetworks vary by destination and are listed on each plan. All trade marks are the property of their respective owners. Halo is not affiliated with these operators.
Italy is well covered in the cities and along the autostrada network, and thinner in the mountains and on the smaller islands. Rome, Milan, Florence, Venice and Naples are all dense. The Dolomites, the interior of Sardinia and the high ground of Sicily are where you will notice gaps. A Halo eSIM installs before you fly and begins counting on its first connection after you arrive. Train coverage between the major cities is good, with drops in the longer Apennine tunnels. Venice is worth a specific mention: the narrow calli and the density of stone attenuate signal in a way that surprises people, and maps become essential precisely where they work least well, so download the city offline before you go. If your trip crosses into France, Switzerland or Austria, a regional Europe plan is usually the better buy.
Four to seven GB covers a week. Italy is a maps-heavy destination, because the historic centres are genuinely hard to navigate and you will have the map open more than you would elsewhere in Europe. Add a couple of GB if you are driving between regions rather than taking trains.
Our Italy plans run on networks carrying 5G, widely available in Rome, Milan and the other major cities.
Updated September 2026
Venice is built of stone, the streets are narrow and the buildings are close together, all of which attenuate mobile signal. Coverage exists across the city but it can be weak and slow in the smaller calli. Download the city map offline before you arrive, because Venice is exactly where you will want it.
Yes, along the main Frecciarossa and Italo routes between Milan, Bologna, Florence, Rome and Naples. Expect the signal to drop in the long tunnels through the Apennines, particularly between Bologna and Florence, and to return on its own afterwards.
Halo eSIMs are exclusively data-only eSIMs. While you can engage in voice calls and messaging through WhatsApp, Facetime, and other widely used VOIP apps, traditional phone calls and SMS are not supported.
Most phones from 2018 onwards support eSIM, including iPhone XR and XS and newer, Pixel 3 and newer, Galaxy S20 and newer. If it's a reasonably recent phone, you're probably fine. Check our device compatibility page if you want to be sure.
Before you leave, while you're still on Wi-Fi. Your plan only starts counting when you first connect to a network at your destination, so there's no cost to installing early. Italy plans run from 1 to 45 days from that first connection. One less thing to sort at the airport.
Each plan lists its own networks and speed policy under Plan details on this page. Which networks a plan uses is set by our network partners and can change without notice, so we show them per plan rather than for the destination as a whole. Your device finds and connects to a supported network on its own when you arrive.
Yes, on the fixed-data plans. Running low? Purchase another plan for the same destination from your order page. The new data gets added to your existing eSIM. No reinstall needed. Top-ups are not available on the Unlimited (daily) plans. To keep using data after an Unlimited plan ends, buy a new plan.
Hotspot availability depends on the plan. Halo adds no separate hotspot cap and does not meter hotspot data differently, so on plans that support it you can share your connection with a laptop, tablet or travel companion where the local network allows. Hotspot is provided by the network operator in Italy rather than by Halo, so it is not something we can guarantee on every plan.
