Australia has strong mobile network coverage in cities and coastal areas, with significant gaps in the vast interior. Halo eSIM connects to Australian carrier networks.
Coverage
Coverage is strong in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Gold Coast, Cairns, Hobart, and all major cities and suburban areas. Coastal highways and popular tourist destinations generally have reliable coverage.
The Australian outback and inland areas have limited or no mobile coverage. Long stretches of highway between major cities, remote national parks, and desert regions are often without signal.
Networks
Halo data plans in Australia run on Australia’s major mobile networks. Your device finds and connects to a supported network on its own when you land, and reconnects as you move between cities and along the coast, so there is nothing to select or configure.
The operator name shown in your status bar may be one you do not recognise, and it may change during your trip. That is normal. Which networks a plan uses is set by our network partners and can change without notice, so each plan lists its own networks and speed policy under Plan details on the Australia destination page.
Tips for Australia
Install before you fly, and it’s ready to use when you land. Download your Halo eSIM profile while connected to Wi-Fi before departure.
Airport connectivity. Sydney (SYD), Melbourne (MEL), Brisbane (BNE), Perth (PER), and all major Australian airports have strong network coverage. Your eSIM should connect within minutes of clearing customs.
Road trips. Coastal routes between major cities generally have coverage. Inland routes and outback highways often do not. Download offline maps and essential information before leaving city areas. The drive between Adelaide and Perth, and through central Australia, has long stretches with no coverage.
Great Barrier Reef. Cairns and the Whitsunday Islands have coverage in towns and populated areas. Coverage on reef boats and remote islands varies.
Tasmania. Hobart, Launceston, and major towns have strong coverage. Remote wilderness areas, including parts of the Overland Track, may have no signal.
Regional areas. Popular destinations like the Blue Mountains, Hunter Valley, Byron Bay, and Margaret River have coverage in town centres. Signal may weaken in surrounding bushland.
Destination-specific notes
- Australia uses Band 3 (1800 MHz), Band 7 (2600 MHz), Band 28 (700 MHz), and Band 1 (2100 MHz) for 4G LTE. Most modern smartphones support these bands.
- Australia does not restrict VPN usage.
