Japan has excellent mobile network coverage in cities, towns, and along major transport routes. Halo eSIM connects to Japanese carrier networks across the country.
Coverage
Japan’s mobile networks cover virtually all populated areas, including Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Sapporo, and Okinawa. Coverage extends to most train stations, airports, and highways.
Remote mountainous areas and some smaller islands may have limited coverage. If you are hiking in rural areas, expect gaps in connectivity away from towns and major trails.
Networks
Halo data plans in Japan run on Japan’s major mobile networks. Your device finds and connects to a supported network on its own when you land, and reconnects as you move around the country, so there is nothing to select or configure.
The operator name shown in your status bar may be one you do not recognise, and it may change during your trip. That is normal. Which networks a plan uses is set by our network partners and can change without notice, so each plan lists its own networks and speed policy under Plan details on the Japan destination page.
Tips for Japan
Install before you fly, and it’s ready to use when you land. Download your Halo eSIM profile while connected to Wi-Fi at home.
Airport connectivity. Narita (NRT), Haneda (HND), Kansai (KIX), and all major Japanese airports have strong network coverage. Your eSIM should connect within minutes of clearing customs.
Shinkansen (bullet trains). Coverage is available along most Shinkansen routes, though connections may drop briefly in tunnels. The Tokaido Shinkansen (Tokyo to Osaka) has particularly strong coverage.
Tokyo Metro and subways. Most Tokyo Metro and major subway stations have mobile coverage. Connections may be intermittent between stations on some lines.
Tethering. Check your plan details to confirm tethering support. If supported, you can share your data connection with other devices via personal hotspot.
Destination-specific notes
- Japan uses Band 1 (2100 MHz), Band 3 (1800 MHz), Band 19 (800 MHz), and Band 21 (1500 MHz) for 4G LTE. Most modern smartphones support these bands.
- Some Samsung devices purchased in South Korea or Japan may have eSIM restrictions. Confirm your device is unlocked before purchasing. See compatible devices.
- Japan does not restrict VPN usage. You can use VPN services freely on your Halo data connection.
